Kiwigrid introduces integrated management system to ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 standards

  • Kiwigrid receives ISO 9001:2015 certification for its quality management system (QMS) and ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification for its information security management system (ISMS)
  • Certification validates the company’s philosophy of focusing on information security, product quality and customer-centric processes
  • ISO 27001 is required for the certification of smart meter gateways and operation of the Kiwigrid platform as a so-called “active external market entity”

IoT-based energy services company Kiwigrid in Dresden has successfully implemented an integrated management system for which it has also received ISO 9001:2015 and ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification. The certification affirms how Kiwigrid already saw itself in its approach to information security, product quality and customer-centric processes.

It took a good year of project work to successfully introduce the management systems within the company. This effort was rewarded in June with ISO 9001:2015 certification for the QMS and ISO/IEC 27001:2013 certification for the ISMS. The four-day audit was conducted by three auditors from TÜV Hessen, and the issued certificates are valid for three years. “We can’t sit back and relax, however. For us, the management system is also a commitment to continuously reviewing and improving our products and services, customer care and IT security. Now we need to prove this in annual surveillance audits,” says Kiwigrid GmbH management spokesperson Matthias Hertel, explaining the next steps.

As a provider of IoT-based and digital energy services, Kiwigrid develops solutions for a wide range of fields – such as electric vehicle charging or energy management for the home. The company’s direction and philosophy have now been validated by the ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certifications. “Kiwigrid considers itself to be an innovator in a decentralized and digital energy industry. The foundation for this is secure IT infrastructure, customer-centric processes, ultimate product quality and safe handling of information. With the introduction of the integrated management system, we have had this validated by an independent body,” says Matthias Hertel.

ISO 27001 certification is also a requirement for Common Criteria certification of smart meter gateways by Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik, BSI). This represents a milestone for Kiwigrid as a manufacturer of smart meter gateway software. Kiwigrid is also planning to develop its platform as a so-called “active external market entity”. ISO 27001 is a prerequisite for this, too.

Background:

DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 – or ISO 9001 for short – lays down minimum criteria for a quality management system (QMS) that a company must implement in order to meet customer requirements and other demands with regard to product and service quality. The standard describes a process-oriented QMS which supports and scrutinizes all key operational processes. Introducing a QMS gives companies an opportunity to increase the transparency of their operational procedures, improve customer satisfaction and cut costs by reducing their error rate.

DIN ISO/IEC 27001 – or ISO 27001 for short – is an international standard intended to ensure information security in private, public or non-profit organizations and businesses. The standard describes the criteria for implementing and operating an information security management system (ISMS) which takes into account the company’s specifications. ISO 27001 also includes requirements for analyzing and addressing information security risks. ISO 27001’s systematically structured approach helps companies to protect the integrity and confidentiality of operational data.
